- "It is a force that connects and pervades all animal life in this universe and many others. A place fully alive, one that every beating heart flows into. Only a chosen few can tap into its raw power."
- —Freedom Beast to Beast Boy[src]
The Red is a concept and force that connects all animal life and micro-organisms in the universe.
History[]
The origin of the Red is currently unknown. It is a force that connects all life in the universe and only a select few people are able to access its power, whom are named the avatars, Champions, Guardians or Protectors of the Red and remain connected to it even after death. These avatars are to be impartial and above having personal family and friends.
Eventually, Gar's consciousness is transported to the Red by unknown means. It is depicted as a wide desert landscape of red sand, sky, moon, and a single large dead tree with the bones of various animals hanging from its branches. The Red communicates to Gar in both this landscape and in the real world using voices that only he is able to hear,[1] as even when he shares visions of the Red with Rachel Roth she is unable to hear them.
Gar appears to have some innate understanding of the Red, as he knows he is able to share visions of the Red with Rachel despite her having no access to her own powers at the time and is certain that the Red is trying to tell him something.[2]
After leaving to get himself a coffee, Gar is joined by an Dominic Mndawe who talks to him about the Red, warning him of events to come and telling Gar that all life depends on him going into the Red. Gar sees a vision of a tower in the Church of Blood's temple breaking. When he sees this vision come true under attack from Sebastian Sanger, Gar heeds the mysterious man's warning and transports himself to the Red just as the other Titans seemingly disappear from existence.[3]
When Gar awakes in the Red, Dominic explains the force in more detail and how Protectors of the Red go back centuries and centuries, and how a helmet passed down through generations of protectors has granted him access to the Red and powers as The Beast. He tells Gar that he is different from anyone else tied to the Red and that his connection goes deeper, allowing him more power than the others. He tells Gar that he is the Changeling, the True Protector of the Red and he has awaited Gar's birth for many years. He proceeds to show Gar more about the Red and his responsibilities. Along the way he encourages Gar to let go of his connections to the Titans and all other Earthly connections as he is "above such things" and that Gar is too important for such distractions. Dominic expresses eagerness for Gar to take over as Protector of the Red, releasing him from decades of service, and while happy Gar accepts is upset that Gar refuses to relinquish his personal relationships as well.
The Red is shown to connect life even across other universes as well as time and conforms easily to Gar's will in a manner Dominic calls "astounding." Upon Gar's request the Red even turns from its signature color to green, simply because it his favorite color.[4]
