Lydia is an Amazon of Themyscira and the mentor of Rachel Roth.
Biography[]
Early life[]
In her youth, Lydia trained under her fellow Amazons in Themyscira, though she was stubborn and willful.[1]
Motherhood[]
Sometime later, Lydia became a mother to a young girl. During a battle, her daughter was killed, causing Lydia and the Amazons to fruitlessly try many times to revive her. Despite being unable to revive her daughter, Lydia witnessed others return from death, though she was never able to comprehend the process and its successes. Over time, Lydia became disillusioned toward her hope to resurrect her daughter, becoming uncertain of the reasons for doing so.[1]
Mentoring Rachel[]
When Rachel Roth and the Amazons returned Donna Troy's body back to her homeplace, Themyscira, Lydia reunited with her fellow sister and, when Rachel opted to stay and train, she began mentoring Rachel too.
Several months into training Rachel, Lydia discovers Rachel still using her powers to try and resurrect Donna, though without any success. Fearing that her attempts may have corrupted Donna's soul, Lydia tries to dissuade Rachel and later informs the council of her actions. Together, Lydia and the Amazons pray to Artemis and search for a way to restore balance; they decide to sacrifice Pnevma, an ancient and legendary monument built before history itself, for Rachel to rebuild perfectly. As Rachel begins trying to put together Pnevma, she asks Lydia why they train so much and what for, as she had trained under the Titans but in order to fight. Lydia remarks that it's the Amazon practice and way, pointing out that Rachel rarely fought as a Titan in spite of all her training. She then wisely tells Rachel a piece of advice she came across in her lifetime: fighting one battle is to only invite another, and another, and so on.
Rachel then seemingly puts back together the Pnevma, though it quickly falls apart when she withdraws her powers, much to her frustration. Lydia informs Rachel that she reminds her of her late daughter, though exclaims that her daughter's temper far exceeded Rachel's; Lydia recounts her daughter's death and their failed attempts at resurrecting her to Rachel. This causes Rachel to ask if it's impossible to revive Donna, but she reveals that she has seen successful attempts before, albeit remaining ignorant to the hows and whys.
After many fruitless attempts to restore balance by rebuilding the Pnvema, Rachel eventually concedes with the fact that Donna is gone and opts instead to leave the island, though not before she finds Donna's body missing from its chambers.[1]
Personality[]
As a child, Lydia was often stubborn and willful. After losing her daughter in battle, Lydia became dedicated and hopeful to finding ways to revive her, especially after witnessing other successful attempts at resurrection. However, her hope dwindled and she became jaded toward her reasons for bringing her daughter back, eventually giving up entirely on the idea.
As an Amazon of Themyscira, Lydia is powerful, wise, honest and loyal chiefly to her people; she also has displayed a much softer side despite her stern nature, coming to see her student Rachel Roth as a surrogate daughter. Despite mentoring Rachel Roth and becoming a sort of mother figure to her, Lydia elected to tell the Amazon council of Rachel's attempts to resurrect Donna, and saw fit to punish her to restore the possible imbalance. Even though strict as a mentor, Lydia is caring and sympathetic, most especially with Rachel's hopes to revive Donna, as she offered her some much-needed advice and an anecdote about her daughter's death, aiming to give Rachel some closure.
