- "But my advice... Don't f*ck with her. You are way out of your league."
- —Jinx to Dick Grayson about Mother Mayhem
Jinx was a former lover of Dick Grayson and previously an inmate of Bludhaven state prison. She was an ally to the Titans in their fight against the Church of Blood before her death at Mother Mayhem's hands.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Jinx operates as a thief using her magic in order to earn large quantities of money. She has in the past worked alongside Dick Grayson, during which time they were lovers. She was imprisoned at Bludhaven State Penitentiary[1]
Freedom[]
She escaped during a visitation by Dick and Koriand'r. Following her escape, Dick and Kory tracked her down to a storage facility where she was attempting to retrieve an elf's artifact in exchange for the large bounty on it.
She owes a substantial debt of five million dollars to an unknown entity, which Dick offers to clear for her in exchange for her help with freeing Kory from a curse inflicted by the elf's artifact and helping his team fight Mother Mayhem.[1]
Working with the Titans[]
Jinx joined the Titans as a consultant in all things magical and she warned them that they were out of their depth. She delighted in teasing Conner about Superman's phobia of magic, which he denied, and was interested to hear about Rachel's father being the head of a cult.
When she was told of the prophetic book the Titans found, and the significance of Sebastian and the blood moon marking the impending end of the world. Jinx dropped her playful persona and told the Titans that they needed to kill Sebastian before any prophecies can be fulfilled, to their collective horror and denial. The Titans are interrupted by a hoard of zombies summoned by Mother Mayhem, who unbeknownst to them had been watching them on cameras, and warning them they need to remove the zombies' heads to kill them and cheering Rachel on for using a chainsaw, Jinx cast a spell to freeze the hoards in place. Jinx warned the Titans she couldn't hold it for long and they flee.
Once there they encountered a zombie Deathstroke, whom Conner fought. Dick demanded Jinx help but she explained she was unable to, she needed time to recharge and began taking off her shoes so her bare feet would touch the ground. Dick caused a distraction so zombie Deathstroke, magically piloted by Mother Mayhem, lost track of the Titans. Jinx used a glamour to disguise herself as Sebastian and allowed herself to be kidnapped, only to catch the zombie Deathstroke off guard in his van by freezing him and then gouging out his remaining eye. Jinx joked and stole his gun before retreating to Dick's waiting car outside.[2]
Destroying the snake[]
The Titans learn that one of Mother Mayhem's snakes infiltrated S.T.A.R. Labs and discuss what to do about it. Jinx jokingly says that they need Samuel L Jackson to handle it, amusing Gar. She is then paired off with Gar in search of the snake, and while doing so Gar confides in her about his visions. Jinx explains to him that the place he was seeing was called The Red and that she knew only rumors about it: that it was a place of great power and mystery. When Gar became worried, Jinx assured him that what he has been given is a gift and he should enjoy it. They are interrupted when they discover a victim of the snake.
Jinx stops a possessed Conner's attempt to lure Sebastian away from S.T.A.R. Labs and his attack on Koriand'r and Dick. With him incapacitated by Jinx's magic, the Titans realised he had been infected with parasitic snakes as a result of Mother Mayhem, using Deathstroke's reanimated corpse, stabbing him with a magical knife. Jinx explained that Conner was cursed and would require a magical expulsion, which she had never done before, and blue ash that she describes as a John Constantine special. She was hesitant to try as they needed to get close enough to the snake within Conner without triggering its defences, stating it is a fortress. Dick and Gar formulate a plan to create a virus small enough to sneak past these defences and kill the snake while leaving Conner unharmed.
Between Gar and Bernard, a plan was created for Gar to transform into a virus and act as a carrier agent for Jinx's blue ash and destroy the snake. During the graphic process, Jinx gets anxious and begins to pray, being mistaken by Tim Drake as a spell cast. Once Gar has successfully destroyed the snake, Jinx celebrates along with Dick, Tim and Bernard.[3]
Fighting with the Titans[]
Jinx reports back to the relieved Titans that Conner will be fine after his ordeal however noted that he was behaving unusually and had flirted with her. After aiding Rachel in tracking her stolen powers, Jinx joined them in a rescue attempt when they discover Conner has been captured. During the fight she reveals herself to Mother Mayhem in a white suit and freezes Mother Mayhem using her magic, however Mother Mayhem is able to move just enough to stab Jinx and in her dying breath she whispers "Not again."[4] Her body, along with all the Titans but Gar, is seemingly transported away by Sebastian Sanger's super sonic scream.
Spirit released[]
When the Titans mysteriously reappear some hours after Sebastian's attack, Jinx's body was gone and a gemstone containing what remained of her spirit was left behind. This gemstone was collected by Rachel, who then used her restored magic to release Jinx's spirit from being trapped within the evil of the Temple of Azarath as the other Titans watch on, regretful of her fate.
She later appears before Gar as he traverses through The Red and comes across her in the Death Realm. She reveals that she has experience with dying and offers him some counsel on the true nature of life and death, and his purpose in the universe. She advises him to let go of his loyalties to the Titans and his sense of self, and tells him that what he belongs to now is so much more important.[5]
Personality[]
A quick-witted criminal loner and a master of dark magic with a joy for manipulating others and creating chaos while doing it.[6]
Jinx is a playful and mischievous woman who enjoys teasing others. She tricks Dick into fighting elves in an attempt to shake him and lied about not being able to cure Koriand'r of her petrification. She switches between taking situations very lightly to very seriously, shown when she tells jokes about the snake in S.T.A.R. Labs yet prays when Gar and Conner's lives are at risk as they attempt to destroy the parasites inside Conner.
